As Jean Cocteau put it so well : The Festival is an apolitical no-man's-land, a microcosm of what the world would be like if men could truly communicate and speak a common language.
The Cannes Film Festival is one of the essential events for the motion pictures industry, attended by prestigious directors and actors as well as up-and-coming artists who have yet to make their mark.
Memorable moments from the Festival archives include Roberto Benigni throwing his arms around the members of the jury in a rather exuberant display of joy after winning the Golden Palm for Life is Beautiful and Björk's rather unusual choice of gown after her memorable performance in Dancer in the Dark.
This year, the festival will again sweep us up in the wave of emotions transmited through the images of the year's most reputable directors.
